30/01/2007 - Opening of the International Conference in Eilat on Tourism, International Relations and Peace Initiatives

The Union of Local Authorities in Israel (ULAI), one of the partners of Medcooperation, organized from the 30th January to the 1st February the International Conference on Tourism, International Relations and Peace Initiatives. The conference, which took place in the coastal town of Eilat on the Red Sea, saw the participation of different local authorities and international organizations both from Israel and Palestine and from other foreign countries such as Italy, France, Turkey, China, Malta as well as UN and European agencies.
After the opening ceremony the first day was dedicated to keynote lectures on international relations and networking between local authorities followed by a session on International Municipal projects.
The second day was devoted to presentations on Peace initiatives through international networks and to Tourism initiatives supported by International organizations and local authorities.
A big delegation of the Med cooperation program attended the event: Andrea Cioncolini of the International Relations Department of the Tuscany region, Claudio Bini of the Province of Livorno, Majed Abdullah, the local coordinator for the Palestinian side, Abdel Rahman Abu Taref of the municipality of Tulkarem, Shimon Lankri, mayor of Akko, Moshe Tzur of the Haifa tourist board and Marta Quattrocchi and Francesca Gilli of Coopera association.
Mr Cioncolini and Mr Bini contributed to the conference with presentations on the Northern holy land heritage way and on the possibility to draw a parallel between Tuscany and Israel and Palestine on tourism promotion and networking between local authorities.
Suggestions and recommendations for the future were drawn during the conferences and new contacts were established with local and international stakeholders.
