15/01/2007 - Steering Committee meeting of Med Cooperation network On the 15th January 2007, mayors and deputy-mayors from the Israeli and Palestinian Municipalities partners of Med Cooperation Programme met at the Presidency of the Regional Authority in order to stress their commitment and their active participation to the network. The second phase of this Programme, which started in 2004, now approaching its conclusion, succeed, as culminant event of all the activities implemented throughout the years both in Tuscany and in the Middle East, in bringing to Florence the political representatives of Akko, Haifa, Taybeh, Jericho, Nablus and Tulkarem. A project agreement, aiming at strengthening the partners’ commitment inside the network and their willingness to continue the path toward a lasting peace in the Middle East through the promotion of the common artistic cultural heritage and of the local productions, has been signed by all the representatives that on the 15th January met in Florence. “Bearing in mind […] that the strength of the network lies in having a common strategy and philosophy under the umbrella of Med-Cooperation, that enables each partner to play a constructive role and make its own uniquecontribution” the partners affirmed their strong commitment to “strengthen the dialogue among them, with the support of Tuscany, in order to contribute, through the communities which they represent, to the consolidation of peace in the Middle East, promoting local development”, as states the agreement itself. The Steering Committee meeting is just the conclusive step of a range of activities organized in Pisa and in Livorno, in order to consolidate the network and to open it to new local authorities willing to join the experience of the Northern Holy Land Cultural Heritage Way. The Northern Holy Land Cultural Heritage Way: from Akko to Jericho passing through Pisa was the title of the day spent in Pisa on the 12th January, where the commitment of the Municipality to peace, enhanced by its double twinning with Akko and Jericho, was stressed. The proposal of a historical race in the sea of Akko, where the Italian Most Serene Republics will be invited to participate, represented an occasion to make the commitment to peace more and more concrete. Tourism and territorial marketing: Livorno contribution to the network already suggests the contents of the day in Livorno. On the 13th January the Province hosted the delegation to show what it can offers once it will become member of the network and it explained its efforts to promote the cruise tourism, the port, the territory, the local products. After the Steering Committee, in the afternoon, the delegation moved to Arezzo, where, in the framework of a meeting called Between local products and historical buildings: the role of Arezzo, a new upcoming project has been illustrated to the partners. Fundamental was the role played by the Regional Authority of Tuscany, more and more perceived as a meeting point for the two peoples, which once more hosted the handshake of Israeli and Palestinian mayors and contributed to the support of dialogue and reciprocal comprehension. |
